Great piece. Oddly enough, I was lucky to be at David Sedaris in NYC last week and became of version of "that" person when I was on my phone coordinating an unplanned, health-related pick-up of my teen who was out of town. More than the coordination, or the show, I kept thinking, oh my goodness, I'm "that" person and I was prepping myself for comments and stares and trying desperately to not be noticed every time I turned my phone to reply. When these moments happen, which is rare, I try to remind myself to have the grace if and when I am witnessing someone else being "that" person. Imperfection everywhere!
Imperfection everywhere, indeed! Thanks for sharing! This is a great reminder for me too. I think this is why I had to sit with the first part of this for so long. I needed to come around to the second part and consider what else could be going on with the usher before I was able to share. When my husband read it, he goes, "Ah, so you added that Jodie spin at the end, huh?" I just can't help myself. I hope your teen is okay!

Love this scene — and the shift in your thinking about the usher as she’s kept showing up in your mind!
She’s baaaaaack! Oh the humanity of us all 🙏🏼
You are still the "nicest" person I know. I'm glad you enjoyed the show with Heather, even tho the wrapper lady was quite annoying.
“Emotional support wrapper” 🤣 I’m dying. I LOVE you as a narrator in this post.
This made me smile so much. Oh humans!
